This year, Los Angeles-based artist-filmmaker Andrew Thomas Huang has created a new work for Sydney Opera House. Huang collaborated with choreographer Toogie Barcelo, dancer Jenna Moroni and animation design team Bemo to create Austral Flora Ballet, a tribute to Australia’s native plantlife.

The 3km Light Walk stretches from The Rocks around Circular Quay to the Royal Botanic Garden. See Claudia Nicholson’s Let Me Down illuminate the Museum of Contemporary Art Australia, interactive slime cover Cadmans Cottage in Goo! and Spinifex Group’s Under the Harbour splashed across Customs House.

Pixar Animation Studios partners with Vivid Sydney to transform the Argyle Cut in The Rocks with a creative architectural light projection. 32 Hundred Lighting’s dancing beams of light and ‘sparkle points’ turn Sydney Harbour Bridge and the skyline into a jewel with City Sparkle.

Experience Vivid Light in eight precincts across the city, including Barangaroo, Darling Harbour, Luna Park, Chatswood and Taronga Zoo. The lights come on every night from 6pm to 11pm (Taronga Zoo lights up from 5:30pm, Chatswood from 5:30pm). Public transport is the best way to get around – plan your journey here.

Vivid Music will showcase a celebration of breakthrough performers and the best in current and future music stars. 2019 will see more than 160 music events held in venues across Sydney, including headline act The Cure performing exclusively at the Sydney Opera House. At Carriageworks, watch shows from RÜFÜS DU SOL and FKA twigs, as well as the ultimate dance party Curve Ball.

Vivid Ideas brings you talks, hands-on workshops and industry-shaping forums, investigating the meaning of love, loneliness and belonging in our fast-paced lives. Revered psychotherapist and creator of podcast Where Should We Begin? Esther Perel looks at modern love in the digital age. Hollywood trailblazer Spike Lee talks about his personal politics and making movies that matter.
